Summer Travel Guide for Orthodontic Treatment

Keep Your Smile on Track Wherever You Go

Summer is the perfect time for road trips, vacations, and outdoor fun, but if you or your child is undergoing orthodontic treatment, travel requires a little extra planning. At Goings Orthodontics, we want every patient to enjoy the season without losing momentum in their smile journey. With the right prep, you can stay comfortable, protected, and confident no matter where your summer adventures take you.

What to Pack in Your Ortho Travel Kit

Must-Have Items for Braces

Whether you’re heading across the country or just spending a weekend away, having the right supplies can make a huge difference. Pack a small kit with essentials such as:

  • Orthodontic wax (to prevent irritation from brackets or wires)

  • A travel-sized toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste

  • Floss threaders or interdental brushes

  • Extra elastics, if prescribed

  • A compact mirror to check for food or issues

  • A small bottle of mouthwash or disposable floss picks

These tools will help you manage daily care, prevent discomfort, and keep your braces clean and functional while away from home.

Don’t Forget Braces-Friendly Snacks

Travel often means grabbing snacks on the go. Avoid sticky, crunchy, or chewy treats that can damage brackets or bend wires. Instead, stick to soft, orthodontist-approved foods like fruit slices, yogurt, sandwiches, or string cheese.

Want more guidance? The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) provides food safety tips for braces wearers to help you plan ahead.

Staying Consistent with Clear Aligners

Daily Routines Matter

If you’re wearing clear aligners, it’s even more important to stay consistent on the road. Aligners need to be worn 20–22 hours per day to work effectively. Make sure to wear them during travel, remove them only for meals, and store them in their case when not in use—never wrapped in a napkin or tossed in a bag.

Dr. Goings recommends brushing after every meal before reinserting your aligners to keep them clean and clear.

Bring Backups Just in Case

If you’re close to switching to your next aligner set, consider bringing both the current and next trays. If one gets lost or damaged, you’ll have a plan. Keep a copy of your wear schedule on your phone, and don’t hesitate to contact Goings Orthodontics if you need remote support.

What to Do If Something Goes Wrong

Common Travel Issues with Braces

Loose brackets, poking wires, or lost rubber bands can happen—but they don’t have to ruin your trip. Use orthodontic wax to cover any sharp edges or uncomfortable spots. If a bracket breaks but stays attached, leave it alone and schedule an appointment once you’re home.

If you’re experiencing pain or swelling, give us a call. We may be able to recommend a local orthodontist or walk you through a temporary fix.

For Clear Aligner Patients

If you misplace a tray or damage it while away, wear the previous one or move to the next if it’s close to your scheduled switch date. Consistency is more important than perfection, and we can advise you on the best option based on where you are in treatment.

How Goings Orthodontics Makes It Easier

Advanced Technology for Easier Planning

Our office uses digital 3D scans and X-rays, so your treatment progress is easy to access and manage, whether you’re across the state or out of the country. If you have a check-in appointment scheduled during your trip, let us know in advance, and we’ll help coordinate your timeline.

Dr. Goings also uses laser technology for procedures like gum contouring or impacted tooth exposures in-house, minimizing the need to see outside specialists. That means less juggling between appointments and more freedom to enjoy your summer.

Safety and Support When You Need It

We prioritize patient safety in everything we do, from digital X-rays that minimize radiation to clear communication about treatment timelines and needs. While we don’t offer lingual braces or mention brands like Orajel, we do focus on reliable, conservative solutions that work for your lifestyle.

Have a travel question before you go? Our team is here to help. From packing tips to emergency advice, we’ve got your back.

Summer Travel Guide for Orthodontic Treatment

Quick Tips Before You Hit the Road

Double Check Appointments

If you’ll be gone for more than a week, schedule a check-up before your trip to make sure everything’s on track. We can replace worn elastics, trim wires if needed, or give you additional supplies.

Take a Copy of Your Treatment Plan

A printout or photo of your current treatment stage and schedule can help in a pinch. If you need to see another provider while away, they’ll have helpful context. You can always call or message us if you need clarification.

Keep It Cool

Aligners and elastics can warp in heat. Don’t leave your case in the car or on the beach. Keep your supplies in a shaded, cool spot during travel days.

Orthodontic Travel Tips for Parents of Younger Teens

Encourage Responsibility and Routine

If your teen is traveling without you—at camp, on a school trip, or with relatives—help them prepare with a short checklist and a well-packed ortho kit. Go over the basics before they leave: brushing after meals, wearing their elastics or aligners, and using wax if something feels off.

Encouraging independence during travel helps teens stay invested in their treatment, even while having fun.

Communicate with Caregivers

If someone else is supervising your teen, make sure they know what to expect and who to call if issues arise. Share our contact information and encourage them to reach out with any concerns. A quick text or call to Goings Orthodontics can save time and prevent small issues from becoming bigger problems.
